Why is it important to practice?
Mindfulness is grounded awareness in the present moment. This is developed through the practice and experience of meditation. The motivation to commit to the training program and the willingness to practice the meditation and mindfulness exercises is the key, as with learning any new skill it is actually by doing it and through practicing that noticeable change and transformation can occur. Everything you do creates connections within the network of your brain, and the more you repeat something, the stronger that connection gets. In learning the new skill of being mindful you have to approach it as learning any other skill, be it a new language, or playing an instrument, or swimming, or skateboarding. It all demands certain qualities and attitudes of mind, including determination, perseverance, and commitment. Without a real desire to learn the new skill of mindfulness it will always just be an idea, a thought and not a skill.
